Practice Gold Panning

Practice Gold Panning

It is best to fully understand exactly How a Gold Pan Works and also to have practiced panning gold before going our into the field – you could be in one of the greatest gold bearing locations and never know it if your panning is not up to scratch. There is a very simple way to do this.

Obviously you will firstly need your prospecting pan or kit in order to do the panning. Next you will need to get your hands on some gravel that you KNOW contains gold – these are available to buy online from some of the highest density gold bearing locations around the world.

It makes a lot of sense to practice gold panning before going out into a real world situation, that way you will be confident in your own ability and also know that if you do not find gold from a real world test pan, gold is most likely not there. This will allow you to get accurate readings from your test pans and consequently a better idea of where the gold is – or is not.

A lot of websites recommend practicing gold panning by getting some river gravels from deep in a riverbed, then mixing some lead in (which is of similar specific gravity of gold and easy to come by) and trying to separate the lead from the other materials by panning. While this does work well and is a great way to practice its just not the same, in my opinion you need real gold within the pan for authenticity, you will also be a lot happier when you are left with some gold flakes rather than some lumps of lead!!!

So, to begin practice gold panning you will need just the following –

Once you have acquired these items you are ready to go. You will become reasonably proficient at gold panning just a few hours worth of panning, it will take longer periods of panning to speed up your process – practice makes perfect.

The reasons why i recommend practice gold panning are as follows –

  • As a beginner, you may not dig the riverbed in the right areas/deep enough to use in your test pan.
  • The Pay dirt is GUARANTEED to contain gold, that way you know for sure that you have gold, and all you have to do is separate it out from the other materials
  • The Pay dirt is EXACTLY the same as what you would have if you dug deep enough into a riverbed in a gold bearing location
  • The Pay dirt will also contain black sands, these can be the hardest part of gold panning, they are VERY CLOSE to the specific gravity of gold, as a result it takes quite a bit of practice to get rid of them by panning alone (a neodynium magnet it also handy for getting rid of these).
  • Pay dirt is a cheap way to learn an expensive lesson, if you are not panning properly you could be losing gold straight out of your pan.

You can buy some Pay Dirt from Amazon that has been taken from the famous Quartz Creek, it is well worth the things it will teach you. ((always test pan over a bucket or other closed container, that way you can retrieve it all and try again).

How to Practice panning for Gold

  • When you have acquired the gold pan and paydirt bring both over to a sink & carefully place the paydirt into the pan.
  • Get a large basin, ensure that it is large enough to allow you to dip the gold pan in and out of confortably. Fill the basin with water and sit it the sink, the basin will be used to collect the gravels that will be discarded. By collecting them in a basin you can simply place them back into the gold pan for more practicing when finished. At all times be sure to have the gold pan over the basin, that way any lost gold can be retrieved.
  • Gently dip the gold pan into the water, give it a little swirl to ensure the paydirt is thoroughly wet. Do this slowly  – a rush of water entering the gold pan could wash the pay dirt straight out into the basin.

The video on the below shows all of these steps in more details, you will also understand the process more after watching someone physicsally doing it –
