A sluice box is essentially a micro river system which you have under your control. It is used to separate the gold and black sands from the other worthless materials commonly found in a river. The riffles, expanded metal and miners moss take the place of the large boulders, small stones and river gravels which would usually trap gold around and beneath them.

A sluice box usually has a flare at the top end, this increases water flow through the box, which in turn will help you extract the gold (once flow is not too fast). For a sluice box to work at optimum efficiency there should be no white water showing in the sluice box – this indicates turbulent flow which will lead to you losing gold.

How does a Sluice Box work?

How a sluice box works is really quite straightforward. It is a simple machine with no moving parts and as such it only relies on the mechanical action of the water and the physical properties of gold to do its work.

As you can see from the image below a sluice box has flared ends, this increases the water flow by funneling the water into a tighter space.

The flared ends allow you to have suitable water flow into the sluice box if you are working in a small stream or slow running river.

Once you begin placing the river materials into the sluice box the first thing they flow over is the primary V Mat.

The V mats are there for you to inspect to see if you are indeed recovering gold from the river gravels. The primary V mat will trap the smallest particles of gold, these will be seen in the tiny troughs. The secondary mat should NOT be showing any gold, this mat is for inspection purposes only. If you find gold on this mat you are most likely losing gold off the back of the sluice box – this means that you may need to modify either the riffle angle, water flow rate, get a different type of miners moss or modify your expanded metal – all of these will be explained on the next page.
