As i have already said the Primary V Mat will trap the smallest dusts and grains of gold, larger gold will pass through the V Mat and continue into the main body of the Sluice Box. This is where you will catch the vast majority of the gold :).

The riffles are essential in understanding how a sluice box works and catches gold. The riffles will catch most of the larger gold. They work on a simple principle in physics – turbulent flow.

As the river water flows over them they create a spiral/vortex behind them, this allows heavier materials to settle directly at the foot of the riffles. Lighter materials will not “stick” to the foot of the riffles and will eventually pass through the sluice box, however heavier materials such as gold, lead, platinum and black sands will get stuck here.

Below the riffles you will find the expanded metal, this collects the smaller gold that the riffles cannot hold onto. They work in the same way as the riffles but on a smaller scale. Gold will try to collect at the bottom of the expanded metals also, and due to its high surface area very little gold will escape being caught by it.

Below the expanded metal you will find miners moss (green in the image above), this catches the finest golds that can possibly be caught, some microscopic gold will always escape. The final parts of the sluice box is the secondary V Mat, as i have said already this is just for inspection purposes, if you fond gold on this mat you need to modify your sluice box in the ways that i have mentioned.
