Can you find Gold in any River

Can you find gold in any river/stream or creek? Unfortunately it is not possible to find gold in just any old river. In fact, the VAST majority of rivers do no contain gold. For gold to be found in a river several factors need to occur, as you can see the odds are pretty slim, you wouldn’t bet on it happening –

  • Over recent geological history (several million years) the area should have underwent some volcanic activity which caused molten Quartz veins to be deposited in the area.
  • These Quartz veins would have had to contained gold (they don’t always contain gold)
  • If the vein did contain gold it would have then had to have been in contact with the natural elements such as rain, erosion etc so that the gold would be broken OUT of the quartz vein and set free into the wilderness
  • Under general erosive forces the gold would have made its way downhill under the force of gravity and intercepted a watercourse ie. river, creek or stream where it would make its way downstream.

From reading the things that need to come its quite surprising that ANY river contains gold, thankfully though, there are so many rivers that a lot of them do, quite a lot of which are probably unknown at this point in time, perfect for us gold prospectors :). If you would like to find out if any of the rivers or areas near where you live contain gold please read my page – How to find gold where you live.
